“Queenie was a quilt who spent most of her time resting. On the whole, she was happy except for her one big problem. A quilt should be fat and warm and snugly but Queenie wasn’t. She was cold and thin and quivery”.
This excerpt very simply explains Queenie’s problem. The story is one of the original six stories published by Thurman Publishing (of Mr Men fame) and remains a firm favourite with the author primarily because it enjoys a silly logic; to get fat, what should a quilt become stuffed with?
With the help of her friend Alice the Alarm Clock (Alice is alarmed by everything), Queenie tries eating different things. She’s a dear sweet old lady – and is very timid – so when she ventures out after dark to seek the help of the ducks it’s a very brave thing for her to do. Being kind and gentle, Queenie appears quite frequently in some of the other stories and everyone loves her. Let’s hear it…. “We all love Queenie!”
