Grannie Annie’s Stories Are Written & Narrated By Jo Kemp

Author: Jo Kemp

Jo Kemp is a British author who as well as providing the voice for Granny Annie, wrote the original scripts for ‘Chorlton and the Wheelies’ and ‘Jamie and the Magic Torch’.

She went on to produce over 100 episodes of ‘The Raggy Dolls’ for Yorkshire TV through her own film production company.

Boodle Books first appeared in the 1980s and were taken up by Thurman Publishing of ‘Mr Men’ fame who published six titles.

Boodle Books became BoodleBobs and 2021 saw the release of Granny Annies Ultimate Alphabet Book containing the completed 26 stories.

Released on-line with cartoons, audiobooks and print media Jo narrates the stories providing the voice for Grannie Annie.

Her latest work ‘The Hourglass’ is the first in a series of fantasy books.

Manifested out of ancient folklore, the Hourglass must be turned to keep the balance between Order and Chaos. Should the Turning fail, the Alternate Prophesies decree Chaos would rule, hastening an inevitable Armageddon. The Turning can only be implemented by the Foundling and this is where the story begins.

Raif, a boy with a passion for clocks and no inkling of his future has a recurring vision of colossal waterspouts unaware this vision is shared by the villainous Darke. He is chosen as the Foundling Elect to succeed Canatu who is mysteriously murdered. Darke, having been instrumental in this murder, desires power absolute and to achieve this has to prevent the Turning but where is the Hourglass hidden? And will it be found in time?

Drawn in by a gilded clock gifted to him, Raif is flung into the adventure of a lifetime while being hunted relentlessly by Darke and his evil forces. He has cause to call into question the improbability of coincidence as he’s catapulted from the Dorset countryside to the terrifying catacombs below Paris and finally to the barren shores of the Arrid Sea and a spectacular showdown. But is this the end or just the beginning…

I bought this book for my nephew who loves his short stories and has an active imagination. This book is fabulous for feeding his imagination and being packed with 26 short stories, you can easily go back to favourites again and again.

The book is well illustrated and well written, excellent value for money.

There’s something immensely satisfying about the letters of the alphabet. They offer no limit to literary invention, and to base a book on the twenty-six letters in the English language one can always be sure of one thing – that there is a beginning and an end, and how vital that is with a children’s story, be it read to them or by them! The title page reveals that the book was something of a labour of love.
The author’s son, illustrator, designer, sound producer and animator, LUKE KEMP so enjoyed the stories of the handful of ‘letter’ characters his mother told him as a small child that he pressed her to complete all twenty- six, so – quite touchingly – here they are! Read more
