Stories To Read Online – Ollie the Off-hand Ostrich
This Online children’s story is all about Ollie and yes, he’s an Ostrich.
Ollie didn’t know where he’d come from or where he was going.

He wasn’t bothered if it was day or night or whether or not he’d put his socks on.
He liked to help out whenever he could, and his favourite word was ‘whatever…’
Being an ostrich meant Ollie had exceptionally long legs that went on forever. And forever.

Fortunately, he also had an equally long neck so pecking about on the ground was never a problem.
He never went hungry because he’d eat anything.
“Hello Crankworth,” he said, swallowing a flower pot. “You seem to be in a bit of a hurry.”
Crankworth was a really naughty pussy cat in hot pursuit of Ratty, an unfortunate rat who happened to pop out when he should have popped in.
“Can’t stop… got to catch that rat,” said Crankworth urgently.
Ollie watched as Crankworth chased Ratty round to the back of the garden shed and was still watching when Crankworth appeared again. “Any luck?” he asked.
Crankworth shook his head. “I lost him up the drainpipe.”

“Can I help?” asked Ollie, having no idea whatsoever that Crankworth wanted to EAT Ratty.
He just thought it was a game.

“Perhaps you can…” said Crankworth slyly as he looked at Ollie’s long legs which, to Crankworth, looked very much like drainpipes.
“Perhaps you’re just tall enough to look down the drainpipe and…I don’t know… encourage Ratty to come out?”
“Whatever…” said Ollie mildly, “If you think Ratty would like that.”
“Oh yes,” replied Crankworth. “He loves surprises.”
Crankworth was right. Ollie was tall enough to look down the drainpipe.
“HELLO…! COME OUT, COME OUT, WHEREVER YOU ARE!” he bellowed down the drainpipe.

Crankworth sat waiting, ready to pounce.
But as no Ratty appeared, Ollie tried again only this time he stuck his head right down the drainpipe until he and Ratty were eyeball to eyeball. “He only wants to play with you,” he explained.
“You mean he wants to EAT me more like!” corrected Ratty.
Now this threw a completely different light on the situation. “Hmm… then that makes him a very naughty pussy cat,” said Ollie. “And what do very naughty pussy cats need?”
“To be taught a lesson!” they both agreed so Ollie made a plan.
“Look up the pipe!” called Ollie, “Rat coming through…”
Crankworth did what he was told and looked up the pipe.
“One…two… three….!”
On the count of three, Ollie took a deep breath and blew down the pipe just as hard as he could as Ratty scampered downwards where he exploded from out of the drainpipe at such a speed, he knocked unsuspecting Crankworth sideways!

“YEOWWW!!” squealed Crankworth rolling over and over, not expecting one in the eye from Ratty.
But Crankworth wasn’t one to give up easily. “Why you… you RAT!” he snarled and with his head to the ground, he crept forward.

SWIPE! Out shot his paw with those very long claws and he only just missed Ratty.

But where had he gone?
“Up here!” called Ratty from the drainpipe. “Come and get me!”
Silly Crankworth.
He stuck his head up the drainpipe, couldn’t get out and that’s where he stayed.
Ratty climbed out of the top and Ollie lowered him gently to the ground.

“Do you think we should help him?” asked Ratty sometime later.
“Whatever….or should I say whenever,” said Ollie.
And Ratty laughed.

About Ollie the Off-hand Ostrich

O is for Ollie: Ollie the Off-hand Ostrich
Ollie is such a cool, laid back ostrich, nothing fazes him.
‘Whatever….’ is Ollie’s favourite expression as he drifts through the day looking for likely – or unlikely – things to eat not worrying about anything. Even though he has very long legs, making reaching the floor rather difficult, he never goes hungry because fortunately, he also has a very long neck.
Having this dual ability to reach very low down as well as very high up, comes in useful when naughty pussy Crankworth chases Ratty up the drainpipe. “Come out, come out wherever you are….” but not in the way Crankworth expected!
Name meaning: Ollie, Short for Oliver. Associated with the Latin term/name ‘Olivarius’ which translates as “Olive tree planter” Oliver on Wikipedia
