Percy The Peeping Pot Plant Read Aloud Book

This read aloud book is all about Percy and yes, he’s a pot plant.

Percy sat on the window ledge looking out of the window.

He did this day after day after day and as a result, he became very bored.

“It’s so QUIET in here,” he said. You could hear a pin drop, a fly sneeze and a mouse snore.

“Why don’t you take an interest in your surroundings,” suggested Boris the book so Percy did – or at least he tried – and this is when Percy started peeping.

He peeped under the sofa and found an old sandwich.

He peeped under the mat and found a letter marked ‘Urgent’.

He peeped under the chair but didn’t like what stared back at him.

“I wonder what the rest of the house is like?” he thought but he had a problem.

He could only just reach the door.

The door and not an inch more.

“Here, take this,” said Boris and handed Percy a large brown bottle.

The label read..

‘SUPA-GROW’ Plant Food. Instructions overleaf’.

“Ohhh…Thank you!” grinned Percy and without bothering the read the instructions, he drank the whole bottle in one.

Silly Percy.

At first, nothing happened.

He looked rather green, but plants always do.

“Oh!” he exclaimed as the room started spinning and then he grew, and he grew, and he grew.

In and out of the chairs, across the table and twice around the hat stand.

He even grew around Boris who wasn’t amused.

“See you later Boris,” said Percy and found himself in the hall looking at the stairs going up and up.

He couldn’t resist.

He snaked his way up the bannister, pushed open a door and came face to face with Dorothy the doughnut.

Dorothy was having her hair done.

Today it was highlights and tints.

“Do you have an appointment?” barked Hilary the hairdryer and not giving him any time to answer, she sat him down in a chair.

“HMM..” she sighed.

“His leaves are lank! His face is green! And he’s out of condition!”

“You’re going to need a THE WORKS!”

Poor Percy!

They washed him, they trimmed him, they put him in rollers then dried him and that was only the first part.

Then they creamed him.

Oiled him, rubbed him down and powdered him and that was only the second part.

Finally, they curled him, combed him, painted him and sprayed him until at last the job was done.

Scary peeping Percy!

Percy high-tailed it down the stairs.

He was just about to go back to his windowsill when he spotted another door.

“Just a peep,” he thought and gasped as he peeped around the door.

It was a wonderful room full of plants!

“Hello! I’m Percy!” he announced but the plants just screamed in fright.

Percy looked more like a monster – to a daffodil that is.

The more he tried to explain, the worse things got until suddenly…

“JUST WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?” boomed Carlos the cactus looking very, very prickly.

“Err… just leaving?” volunteered Percy and just as Carlos was about to tie him up in knots something strange happened.

Percy shrank. And shrank again.

He shrank back through the door, back along the hall and back to his normal size on the windowsill.

The Supa-Gro plant food had worn off.

“I’m so glad to be back,” sighed Percy.

And after that things were different.

He looked a sight with his painted face and curly leaves, but he never got bored again.

Why? Because everyone from miles around would come along and peep at him and Percy…

…well, he rather liked it.

The end

Percy downs the potion in one (silly Percy) then he grows and he grows all around the house providing him with the means to be nosy. He finds himself in the beauty parlour, “His leaves are lank!

I bought this book for my nephew who loves his short stories and has an active imagination. This book is fabulous for feeding his imagination and being packed with 26 short stories, you can easily go back to favourites again and again.

The book is well illustrated and well written, excellent value for money.

There’s something immensely satisfying about the letters of the alphabet. They offer no limit to literary invention, and to base a book on the twenty-six letters in the English language one can always be sure of one thing – that there is a beginning and an end, and how vital that is with a children’s story, be it read to them or by them!    The title page reveals that the book was something of a labour of love.
The author’s son, illustrator, designer, sound producer and animator, LUKE KEMP so enjoyed the stories of the handful of ‘letter’ characters his mother told him as a small child that he pressed her to complete all twenty- six, so – quite touchingly – here they are!  Read more
