This children story is all about Xavier and yes, he’s a xylophone.
A Xylophone (Z-EYE-LER-FONE is how you say it) is a musical instrument that likes being bashed with a hammer.
Personally, I’m very glad I’m not a Z-EYE-LER-FONE.

“But I like it,” said Xavier to his only friend Percy the pot plant, “It doesn’t hurt and it makes a lovely sound.
Percy had to agree. He got very bored sitting on his window sill all day so when Xavier took hold of his hammers and bashed out a bit of boogie-woogie, it certainly made the day go better.
“You should put on a performance,” he suggested, “Invite a few friends along.”

“What!” exclaimed Xavier, immediately taking refuge in his box. “I couldn’t possibly do that!”
“Why not?” asked Percy.
“Because I’ve got you, Boris the book and Benny the bookworm.
Why should I need more friends than that?”

Percy could see he had a point and for the rest of the day, Xavier stayed inside his box.
“Come out and give us a tune,” said Benny from on top of the box.
“No,” said Xavier.
“Okay, well give us a tink from INSIDE the box.”

This request was greeted with silence until after a little while, a single note escaped. Benny decided it was a C (whatever that was).
“That sounded lovely,” encouraged Percy, “Can I have one too.
How about an E?”
Xavier let another note escape.
Then another and another.
Soon the room was filled with a whole melody which slipped under the door, drifted along the hall and enveloped the whole house.
It drifted up the stairs and out of the open windows where the sweet sound filled the garden, danced down the road and didn’t stop until it reached the seaside where the wind carried it over the ocean.
“What a beautiful sound,” said Eva the egg timer and ticked in time with the music. “Lovely,” said Alice the alarm clock and stopped ticking altogether.
“Music to lay eggs by,” clucked Henrietta the hen and found she’d laid two of them.

Even Crankworth, that bad old pussy cat forgot to chase Ratty while Elsie the elephant hummed gently as she dozed in her apple tree.

One by one, they all wanted to know where the beautiful sound was coming from.
So, one by one they all trailed into the house, along the hall to the room where Xavier was playing inside his box.
“Shhh…” said Percy, “Don’t let him hear you. If you do, he’ll stop playing…
You see, he’s shy and afraid of making new friends.”
Not wanting the music to stop, everyone remained silent until Xavier had finished.
Then the room EXPLODED WITH THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE!
Poor Xavier jumped out of his skin and in doing so, jumped clean out of the box.

He didn’t know what to do or which way to turn. Everyone was smiling and cheering him.
“We love you!” chorused the House Mites.
“Bravo!” said the seagulls who’d flown all that way.
“PLEASE…. Play some more!” said Queenie and everyone echoed this.

Percy branched out from the window-sill and put a leafy arm around Xavier. “You see!” he said. “They like you! They like you very much and they LOVE your music so wouldn’t it be nice if you made friends?”

Xavier thought about this for a moment. “What about the box?” he asked. Could I still stay it?”
“Yes of course,” replied Percy happily. If that’s where you feel happy. But think about it and maybe one day…”
“…Maybe one day I’ll want to think OUTSIDE the box!” grinned Xavier and started to play all over again.

About Xavier the Xenophobic Xylophone’s Free Children’s Book

X is for Xavier: Xavier the Xenophobic Xylophone It’s a good job there’s such a thing as a xylophone (ZZZ-EYE-LOW–FONE) otherwise we’d be pretty stuck for an X character! Xavier is a great name too (say it two parts X-AVIER) and
now get ready for the big one…
Xenophobic. ZEN-O-FO-BIC is how you say it and it’s a grown-up word that isn’t very nice. It actually means ‘being frightened of the new friends you haven’t met yet’ and that’s a very silly way to be.
Xavier is frightened of anything new or different to him, so he hides in his box. This is such a shame because he makes such beautiful music and it’s only when he overcomes his fears that he realises how daft he’s been.
Name meaning: Xavier is a boy’s name of Arabic (Basque) origin meaning ‘new house or bright’ Xavier wikipedia
