Percy was a pot plant who lived on the window sill in a room that was only ever used on Sundays.
It was a very pleasant room.
Not too hot.
Nor too cold.
Nor too dark.
It was a very nice room. But oh! Wasn’t it quiet!

All through the week, Percy sat there with nothing to do but stare out of the window. And that could get very boring.
Very boring indeed.
“I’m fed up,” sighed Percy to Silas the sideboard. “Why doesn’t anything exciting happen?”
Silas yawned a very old yawn. “Everyone wants excitement these days,” he grumbled. “Why don’t you take more interest in your surroundings?”
And with that he went back to his paper, which was almost as old as he was.

It all went quiet again and the silence went
on.
And on.
Percy thought about what Silas had said and, even though it was a very dull room, he decided to take a new look at it.
And it was from that moment that Percy started peeping.
He peeped into the coal scuttle and found a very old sandwich.

Percy peeped under the mat and found a dusty letter marked ‘Urgent’.
He peeped behind the picture. And had his nose pinched by a spider.
In fact, Percy peeped into everything. Every drawer, every cupboard, every book. Every possible nook and cranny that could be peeped into was peeped into.
And Percy found that he liked it.
Naughty nosey Percy.

After a while, Percy started wondering what the rest of the house looked like.
But he had a problem. He could only just
reach the door.
The door and not an inch more.
“Take this,” muttered Silas and handed Percy a large brown bottle. It said: ‘Supa-Grow
Plant Food. Instructions overleaf.’
“Oh! thank you!” said Percy, and without bothering to read the instructions, he drank the whole bottle in one.
Silly Percy.

At first, nothing happened.  Percy looked rather green but plants always do.

“Ugh!” he groaned and shook like a jelly.

“Oh!” he exclaimed, going squiggly all over.

Then he grew and he grew and he grew.

Percy grew in and out of the chairs, right across the table and three times around the

hat stand.

He even grew twice around Silas, who wasn’t amused.

“Pull yourself together!” said Silas when Percy had finally stopped growing.

So Percy did but with a great deal of difficulty!

At last, Percy was ready for his tour around the house. “See you later Silas,” he whispered, and silently slid round the door. Percy found himself in the hall facing the stairs, which went up and up.

He couldn’t resist them. “How exciting!” he thought as he slid up the bannister.

“What an adventure!” Percy giggled as he wriggled round the door at the top.

Suddenly, a very shrill voice rang out. It was Hilary the hair dryer.

“What are you doing?” demanded Hilary, who was joined by Betty the beauty box. “Yes, what are you doing?” asked Betty. “I… I… just wanted to have a look stammered Percy, “I some excitement

“We’ll give you some excitement,” the girls chuckled, and before Percy could escape, they

grabbed him.

“His leaves are lank!” said Hilary.

“His face is green!” said Betty.

“He’s out of condition!” they both said together.

Poor Percy. Poor old peeping Percy. The next five minutes were a nightmare.

They washed him, they trimmed him. They put him in hair rollers and dried him.

And that was only the first part.

Then Hilary and Betty creamed Percy, and oiled him. They rubbed him down and powdered him.

That was the second part.

To finish off, they curled him and combed him, they painted him and sprayed him. And at last the job was done.

Hilary stood back with Betty and giggled. But Percy didn’t think it was funny at all.

“Whew!” Percy sighed when he had made his escape, “I’ve had enough.

And he was just about to go back to his window sill when he noticed a nice red door. “Just a peep,” he thought, and gasped with delight at what he saw.

It was a room full of plants.

“Hello, I’m Percy!” said Percy, but when the plants saw him they screamed with fright. And we know why don’t we?

After what Percy had been through he looked more like a monster.

To a daffodil that is.

Oh dear. The more Percy tried to explain the more the plants screamed. Then suddenly all went quiet.

It was Percy’s turn to tremble as he turned and slowly looked up at a very angry and very ugly Carlos the cactus.

“What do you think you’re doing?” growled Carlos in his great deep voice.

“Err… just leaving?” suggested Percy feeling rather faint. But Carlos had other ideas.

He was just about to tie poor Percy up in knots when something strange started to happen.

Percy shrank. And shrank again.

Percy shrank back through the door, back along the hall and back to his normal size and to his normal place on the window sill.

The Supa-Grow mixture had worn off.

Silas looked up from his newspaper and grunted, but Percy didn’t care.

He was glad to be back. He decided never to go peeping again.

After that, life was quite different for Percy. He looked rather a sight with his painted face and curly leaves, but he never again got bored because everyone from miles around would come to peep in at him!

And Percy, well he rather liked it!
